In a forum thread a participant noticed that while on an outing with other folks in a photography meetup in a museum that the results shown later varied widly depending on the WB used.

That was to be expected as if you use a manual WB it is not dynamic enough to cover all lights situation, same goes when selecting a camera WB mode.  Then he mentioned that while the auto WB gave the most consistant results but that there were several noticeable misses.  The reason for that is simple:  The camera uses the dominant averaging color to determine the WB.  If you use auto WB, expect this.  A bright light will throw off the auto WB.

Then he also reported that those using flash were not having much success as their images looked 'flat'.  When one uses a flash the camera records 'daylight' if it was set on auto WB.  This what the flash does: recreate a light close to daylight.  If the flash is 'full' it will influence the whole capture and as such 'flatten' the capture.  If used as 'fill light' the flash being less powerful will not influence everything so the ambiant light surrounding the subject stays while the subject 'stands out' in daylight.

I mention this becauses it shows how important it is for all to know how to use a WB, the limitations and what it will influence in the final result, like a flash or any strong light in the background.

UniWB being about exposure will suffer from the same 'illness' so it is not the solution for everything either.  You must learn how to deal with mixed light quality in order to get the best SOOC capture before even thinking about post processing it.

Once again, this is a case of 'practice, experiment, practice'...

It is not what you know that is important, how you use it is.
